Project type

Voces | Social Theater | Theater in Spanish | Community Talkback

Date

March 2023

Location

Fringe Art Space

The play Puerperio, presented as part of VOCES 2023, offered a profound exploration of the often idealized experience of motherhood, with a focus on the postpartum period, known as the puerperium. A group of female performing artists came together to reflect on and challenge the romanticized view of motherhood. The performance addressed themes such as loneliness, violence, female lineage, fantasies, and the multifaceted light and shadows of becoming a mother. By examining these topics, Puerperio*shed light on the emotional and physical transformations that women undergo during this critical period, moving away from traditional, idealized narratives.

Following the performance, UCF scholar Dr. Charlotte Trinquet du Lys led a thought-provoking conversation, offering her academic insights on the deconstruction of motherhood's romanticization. The discussion explored societal expectations and the often unspoken realities enriching the audience's understanding of the complexities portrayed on stage. Through this dialogue, Dr. Trinquet du Lys deepened the reflection on the challenges, pressures, and emotional intricacies of the women's experience.
